The benefit from the slit vertical pupils is a better night vision and for an ambush predator like the viper it could help as camouflage since the slit pupil breaks away from how an eye “normally looks like”, and the chance of being seen is smaller. Normally vipers are light brown with a darker zig-zag pattern on top, but there are also completely black – melanistic – individuals which can be found in forests, in areas with water and on islands (like Saaremaa).Īnother thing to look for is the eyes of the snake, more specifically the pupils, because Natrix natrix has round pupils, whereas the viper has slit vertical pupils. It could also be referred to as a yellow and black collar that is found behind the head. I now know that the best way to tell the one species from the other is to look for yellow, white or red spots on the upper neck of the snake, which indicates that you have a grass snake in front of you. Katrin’s father was called to the scene, and he quickly made the remark – that this is the poisonous one, Vipera berus. At this time, I was pretty sure it was the non-poisonous grass snake, Natrix natrix, lying ahead of us, and I moved close to take some pictures. I called for Katrin’s younger brother to come join me and look at it. It was lying there completely still, sometimes extending it’s tongue, which I took as a sign that it was hunting. I hadn’t gone far until I froze in my tracks – starring at the big black snake that was blocking the trail ahead. ![]() The crossbands are light tan to pinkish tan and darker on the outside edges. A copperhead snake has a thick body that is pale tan to pinkish-tan with pale crossbands and dark brown spots. Species from this large family are found all over the world, except for Antarctica, Australia, north of the Arctic Circle, New Zealand, Madagascar, and some island clusters such as Hawaii. They are typically 20-37 inches long though they can grow over four feet long. The viper snake is one of over 200 species that belong to the family Viperidae. After having worked in the sun it was nice to hit the shade from the canopy covering the small forest path in front of me, which I trotted on with the ladder on my back. Copperheads’ are another dangerous member of the viper snake family. The viper was transported to a cage in a lab that resembled the semi-arid land of scrub and forest the snakes normally inhabit. After finally finishing the whole project, it was time to take the ladder I’d borrowed back to Katrin’s grandparents whom lived nearby. ![]() During my visit to Saaremaa this summer, I helped out cutting the hedge around Katrin’s parents’ house.
